How emergence conditions of technological clusters affect their viability? Theoretical perspectives on cluster lifecycles

The widely studied concept of clusters has been usually treated as pre-established and successful structures. We argue that clusters are not pre-established but emerge through a double competition process of technological and regional nature. Moreover, faced to a changing environment they are not always successful. Their long-term evolution depends on their viability capacities. Trazos de una naciente historia del arte : los dibujos de la lonja de Palma para la Memoria de Jovellanos

Las Memorias sobre las fábricas góticas de Mallorca que Jovellanos escribió (1806-1808) como prisionero de Bellver han sido reconocidas no sólo como una aportación clave al conocimiento de la arquitectura gótica de la isla, sino también como una contribución de primer orden a la naciente historia del arte en España. Aunque publicadas repetidamente, se daban por perdidos los dibujos que se sabe las complementaban. La localización de una nueva versión manuscrita, ésta sí con las láminas, nos ha impulsado a releer la Memoria sobre la lonja -la más lograda de cuantas escribiera el ilustrado-, a dar a conocer las cinco láminas que la acompañan y a plantearnos la importancia que los dibujos tuvieron para que Jovellanos pudiera llevar a cabo las Descripciones de los monumentos y para que Ceán Bermúdez, el destinatario de los textos, conociera mejor las obras tratadas por la pluma del ilustre gijonés.The Memorias of the Gothic buildings that Jovellanos wrote (1806-1808) as a prisoner in the castle of Bellver (1802-1808) have been recognized not only as an essential element for interpreting the Gothic architecture of the island of Mallorca, but also as a major contribution to the developing art-historical discipline in Spain. Despite the fact that the Memorias had been repeatedly published, the drawings originally accompanying them were assumed to be lost. However, the recent fi nding of a new manuscript version of the text, now complemented by its illustrations, has prompted us to present these fi ve drawings as well as revisit the Memoria of the Lonja, the best of all the Memorias that Jovellanos wrote. This fi nding has also lead us to refl ect upon the importance the plates had for Jovellanos to be able to carry out his Descripciones of the monuments, as well as for Ceán Bermudez -the actual recipient of Jovellanos' texts- to have a better understanding of the monuments so skillfully «described» by the illustrious son of Gijón

Network structural properties for cluster long run dynamics. Evidence from collaborative R&D networks in the European mobile phone industry

In a recent literature, the structural properties of knowledge networks have been pointed out as a critical factor for cluster structural changes and long run dynamics. Mixing evolutionary economic geography and network-based approach of clusters, this contribution aims at capturing and discussing the particular influence of hierarchy (degree distribution) and assortativity (degree correlation) in the innovative capabilities of clusters along the industry life cycle. We test our propositions in the field of the mobile phone industry in Europe from 1988 to 2008. We use EPO PATSTAT and OECD REGPAT to capture cluster trends, and R&D relations from European Framework Programs to capture knowledge networks and their evolving structural properties. Inflammatory Biomarkers and Subclinical Atherosclerosis in African-American Women with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)

Women with lupus are at increased risk for developing cardiovascular disease (CVD). Previous studies of atherosclerosis in SLE have not been representative of the minority groups most affected by lupus and its complications. Therefore, a study of 41 lupus cases and 83 controls was conducted to investigate the relationship between carotid atherosclerosis and inflammation in African-American women. Participation consisted of a questionnaire, physical examination, fasting blood draw, and ultrasound of the carotid arteries. There were observed differences between cases and controls with regard to carotid intima media thickness (IMT) and traditional cardiovascular risk factors, although few reached statistical significance. Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha was significantly related to carotid IMT, lupus, body mass index, and hypertension, indicating that it may be an important factor to consider in future studies of cardiovascular risk in African American women with lupus. This study adds to scientific literature by demonstrating that there may be other factors in the link between SLE and CVD

Psychosocial needs of women and their partners after successful assisted reproduction treatment in Barcelona

It is assumed that pregnancy and parenthood after a period of infertility are unproblematic and gratifying. However, a review of the literature highlights the complexity of the psychological and social consequences of pregnancy, childbirth and parenting after successful treatment with assisted reproductive technology. These experiences, including those following the creation of new forms of non-genetic and/or social parenthood, require investigation in order to understand how women and their partners integrate their journey from infertility to pregnancy and parenthood after successful assisted reproductive treatment. This paper presents results derived from qualitative interviews with 30 pregnant women and 21 couples after assisted reproductive treatment (repeated rounds of individual interviews with the study participants) conducted from July 2010 to April 2014 as part of a larger ethnographic study exploring the psychosocial needs of women and partners following assisted reproductive treatment in Barcelona's. The transcribed text was coded into categories of either predetermined or emergent topics. Prior studies have found that couples who achieve pregnancy after infertility may experience higher levels of anxiety in relation to pregnancy. This anxiety can be linked with a higher risk of complications during pregnancy after assisted reproductive treatment compared with spontaneous conception. However, the evidence concerning adjustment to pregnancy and parenthood is inconclusive. This study highlights the necessity for participants to give meaning to these treatments, given the variability that exists in perceptions of infertility and pregnancy after successful assisted reproductive treatment

A Hardware Architecture for Scheduling Complex Real-Time Task Sets

The problem of jointly scheduling both hard deadline periodic tasks and soft aperiodic tasks has been the subject of considerable research in real-time systems. One of the most widely accepted solutions for this problem are slack stealing algorithms. However, these algorithms are rather impractical, since they all imply a considerable scheduler overhead. This paper faces the overhead problem by introducing a complete hardware architecture that implements slack stealing in hardware using an optimal algorithm redesigned to be implemented efficiently in hardware. The proposed solution is a circuit that behaves as a kind of sophisticated interrupt controller taking the task workload and the interrupts as inputs, and providing the highest priority task to be executed in the CPU. From the point of view of hardware design, the algorithm involves two main problems: first, to select the highest priority task at every moment and, second, to locate a set of slack gaps in a real-time computation. Locating slack gaps in a real-time computation is a problem that requires to “look forward in time” into the forecast schedule of a given workload. This paper analyses the different approaches for solving this problem and presents a novel architecture to solve it efficiently using a technique based on an event-driven simulation of the future of a real-time computation. RDT : una mirada crítica sobre el dibujo profesional

Esta comunicación describe un proyecto que tiene como punto de partida la experiencia de sus autores en impartir docencia en el ámbito del dibujo técnico, de proyectos de arquitectura, realizado con sistemas informáticos. Hasta hace muy pocos años el peso del esfuerzo de aprendizaje del dibujo técnico se concentraba prioritariamente en el desarrollo disciplinar de una imprescindible habilidad técnica o manual. La implantación de los nuevos sistemas ha minimizado el coste del dominio técnico de la producción del dibujo. Pero, en contrapartida, los aspectos conceptuales y lingüísticos del discurso gráfico han cobrado un protagonismo en el proceso de representar que ha invertido por completo la anterior correlación de pesos. Representar con eficacia, en medio de la explosión de recursos que brindan los sistemas informáticos, exige un constante ejercicio de rigor y selección consciente e intencionada. Algo que requiere gran claridad conceptual. Desde siempre, y más aún en el actual mundo mediático, los estudiantes de arquitectura han tomado como referente para su aprendizaje el trabajo de los profesionales: lo que ven en las revistas o lo que aprenden en los despachos donde trabajan. Como es característico de nuestro mundo actual, el cambio que ha supuesto la irrupción de los sistemas informáticos en el ámbito de la representación arquitectónica se ha producido en muy poco tiempo. Hoy ya es evidente que se trata de mucho más que de un simple cambio de instrumentos; se trata más bien de una sacudida, desde sus cimientos, de sistemas lingüísticos que han perdurado durante siglos. Y, lógicamente, la profesión no ha tenido capacidad ni tiempo material para asimilar ese cambio. Hoy, el ámbito de la representación arquitectónica profesional es un terreno de confusión donde han aparecido también nuevos actores, más allá de los propios arquitectos: grafistas, publicistas, informáticos, ingenieros, etcétera. El principal objetivo del proyecto RDT (Razones del Dibujo Técnico) es dar pautas para enfrentarse con mirada crítica a ese magma mediático de registros gráficos con que se expresa la actividad profesional del momento actual. Pautas para discernir entre aquello que –con mayor o menor acierto, con mejor o peor dominio técnico- responde a una voluntad de representar y explicar una propuesta arquitectónica o constructiva y aquellos otros registros que no son más que inexpresiva geometría o reflejo de unos modismos visuales sin un discurso consistente. El elemento central del proyecto es la creación de un fondo de dibujos de arquitectura actuales, producidos con medios informáticos. Son dibujos con ciertas cualidades de intención comunicativa, directamente extraídos del ámbito profesional y cedidos por sus autores sin ningún tratamiento posterior, es decir, con el aspecto original con que cumplieron su función en la actividad profesional. En torno a ese fondo de dibujos ya previamente seleccionados, se despliega un conjunto de medios orientados a facilitar su consulta, por parte de estudiantes, profesionales y estudiosos en general, y a atender al objetivo citado de dar pautas de interpretación y lectura crítica de los mismos. La comunicación expone con precisión más amplia los objetivos del proyecto y describe con detalle los elementos de desarrollo del mismo

Animation to explain constructive geometry

The project we are working on, and the one we want to present to the Conference, aims precisely to show, from a constructive viewpoint and by means of animation, what the geometry that supports the design and construction of several elements of the Gaudi’s work is. In particular, we are planning to present a video clip showing the constructive control of geometry of one of the Palau Güell’s chimneys. Through the visual capability of the animation, this clip goes to show: how the hat of this chimney is governed by a logarithmic spiral and in which way we can control its construction only by means of a ruler, a set square and some strings.Postprint (published version
